Wham-O has partnered with wholesale retailer Costco to launch a new version of its iconic Slip ‘N Slide outdoor toy that opens up a lot of potential for new licensing opportunities.
As the product’s exclusive retail partner, Costco will sell Slip N’ Slide Air at select warehouses across North America and on its e-commerce site later this year. The latest generation of Wham-O’s backyard waterslide features a 30-foot curved sliding surface, a blower to inflate it in minutes, and a waterfall splash tank and water cannon to add more play value.
Wham-O’s global licensing agency Anjar & Becker Associates will handle all L&M business for the toyco’s new water slide. It has repped Wham-O’s brands (which also include ranges of Hula Hoop, Hacky Sack, Frisbee and Super Ball products) since 2021.
Slip N’ Slide Air is launching just as The Toy Association has predicted that sports toys and active play items will experience a surge in popularity from the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. The category could certainly use a shot in the arm. Sales of outdoor and sports toy products in the US have dropped steadily since their peak in 2021 (US$6 billion), according to Statista. Last year, the category generated just US$4.5 billion at retail, an 18% drop from US$5.4 billion in 2022.
